Welcome to Mrs. Canaday's First and Second Grade Classroom

Our first day of school is August 24, 2009 beginning at 8:30 AM. I'm looking forward to meeting each of you. The first day we will put supplies away, get acquainted, play some fun games and begin learning classroom routines. School dismisses at 12:30 PM on Monday, August 24.

A Brief Overview of Core Classwook

Bible

In our lessons we will be exploring God's Power. Your student will be reading from the International Children's Bible. Each time we look up a new text, students will highlight the text with a yellow colored pencil. By the end of the year there will be many texts highlighted.

Reading

Our reading program is a combination of guided reading, independent reading and a theme book each month from our Pathways program. We do many activities with the monthly theme book, both written assignments and a variety of other projects.

The Pathways program also includes word study, spelling, daily edit, writing, and phonics.

Math

During the year the first graders need to learn the addition/subtraction facts 0-10. The second graders will review those facts as well as continue learning the facts to 18. Second graders will learn double digit addition/subtraction with regrouping. The children also study geometry, fractions, measurement, telling time, counting money and problem solving.
