MORE 50 Book Finishers: More students have finished reading 50 classroom books at home. Each of them received a $5.00 gift certificate from Barnes & Noble for that accomplishment. Congratulations: Christopher, Isabella, Lily, Martha, & Paige. There are several students who are not far behind. This is a Reading Class!

Happy Birthday: We have two more November birthdays: Tateum will be 8 on November 20 and Isaiah will be 7 on the 28th! Happy Birthday boys.

Christmas Offering: Again this year we will be raising money for the hungry through the ADRA program. I just received the flyer in the mail telling of the match program where every $1.00 contributed will be extended to $7.00 for the feeding programs they operate. It’s a fun way for the kids to watch their contributions grow rapidly. We will have a cookie sale on the first Friday of December.

Singing at Richland Seventh-day Adventist Church: The address is 1807 McMurray Avenue, Richland. Students should be arriving about 10:45 so you can find a seat. The children will sit with parents and come up front right after the Kindergarten/Third & Fourth students sing. They will return to sit with parents when our part is finished. There is a church potluck at the conclusion of the service.

Warrior Maiden Booklet: The students are bringing home a small booklet with the highlights of the Warrior Maiden story. Please have them read the booklet to you. Thanks!

Citrus Fruit Sales: You will notice the Fresh Florida Citrus order form in the Homework folder today. I would encourage you to participate in this fund raiser. The proceeds that our class brings in will be used toward class activities and supplies. What a great healthy snack these fruits are for your kids—lots of Vitamin C and fiber!

Next Week’s Show & Tell: We have a tradition on the last Friday of October to have a favorite food potluck. Each student should bring enough of a food to share with their class members. Don’t send a lunch or order hot lunch. There is always plenty!

Field Trip: Thank you to the parents who took the time to drive to the Pumpkin Patch. We had a great time. The students made a class book of their favorite activities.

Because of the recently discovered cost of parking at Sacajawea Park we have cancelled the field trip scheduled for Friday the 21st. It’s just not worth the $70 or $80 it would cost the class in parking fees.

Visitor: On Monday, our friend, Mrs. Paula, came dressed in a Cheyenne Indian costume. The children enjoyed seeing the fancy beadwork and touching the mink fur hairpieces.

SHOW & TELL: An Indian artifact/picture (I’m switching Nov. 4 with Oct. 7—We’re reading The Warrior Maiden this month instead of We All Went on Safari which will be in November. Plans changed because the museum is closed in November so we need to have our field trip while it’s still open.)

Field Trip: On Friday, October 7, we will be going to the Country Mercantile Pumpkin Patch. Please have your student dress for the weather. It’s suddenly cooler than we’ve been used to! Tennis shoes and jackets would make the trip more enjoyable for the students.

Nutrition: This week we’ve been talking about fiber in foods. Have your child look on the labels of packaged foods and find the grams of dietary fiber per serving. They’ve been working in the classroom on a paper that tells about the grams of fiber in fruits and vegetables.

Field Trip: On Friday, October 7, we will be going to the Country Mercantile Pumpkin Patch on Highway 395. Bobby Jo Engeberg already has drivers for the trip. (Thanks very much, Bobby!) The students’ entrance fees will be covered by class funds. If a younger sibling goes along the charge will be $3.00. The adults are not charged.

Nutrition: This week we’ve been talking about Vitamins. Reinforcing the concept at the dinner table at night would be a good thing! This week’s vitamins were K & E. We tasted sunflower seeds this week.

Sunflower Seeds: On Monday we took apart a huge sunflower donated by the Engeberg family. The students estimated how many seeds were in the flower. The closest estimate to the 2,163 seeds that were in the flower was Tateum’s estimate of 2, 139. The children each got to help count the seeds by putting them in groups of 10. Thankfully, Mrs. DeDios did the hard work of putting all the 10’s into the final number. We soaked the seeds in salt water overnight, then toasted them in a slow oven on Tuesday. It’s a good thing it was a slow oven! Mrs. Canaday forgot them for 3 hours. They were just right when Kasi went running in to tell Mrs. DeDios to quickly take the seeds that teacher forgot out of the oven.
The seeds proved to be quite messy in the classroom, but none of the children will forget where sunflower seeds come from now.

Field Trip: Thank you to the parents who took time to take us to the Farmer’s Market. The children had a wonderful time seeing all the fruits and vegetables that were available. They also enjoyed getting to purchase some for themselves. Thank you for participating by being with us or by sending money for your student to use.

Scholastic Book Club: You can now order Scholastic Books online using this class activation code: HLC6H. Each order online will give us a $3.00 coupon to use to buy books for the classroom. So if you missed my classroom order deadline last week, you can go online and order.

Field Trip: Wednesday, September 21, we will be going to the Pasco Farmer’s Market. We’ll leave the school at 8:45 and return not later than 10:15. My guess is that our return we’ll be earlier than that but we’ll see how long it takes for the children to choose what produce they want to purchase. Please send $1.00 or $2.00 so your student can buy something fresh. (not the kettle corn that may be available!) Each student that is younger than 8 must bring a booster seat for the car per Washington State law.

Polo Shirt: Remember the school rule about polo shirts/collared shirts. Starting next week I will be asking your student to change into a polo shirt if he/she forgets to wear one to school. I do have shirts that I can loan for the day.

Home Reading: I need your help in monitoring the reading level of what your child is bringing home to read to you each evening. It’s a book of their choosing. If the book is too difficult for them, (more than 5 words missed in 5 sentences), ask your student to look for an easier book for the next night. If the book is too easy, ask for a more difficult book to be chosen the next day. Not only should they be able to read the words, but use expression to make the story interesting.

Math Vocab: Ask your student to define addend , difference, and sum for you.

Nutrition: Thank you for the food containers/wrappers. It was a good visual for sugar contained in some of the foods. A student from another class had a can of soda which we borrowed. 43 grams of sugar in one 12 ounce can! It made an impact on the students as we were using unifix cubes to show grams of sugar. It was a long train of cubes!

SHOW & TELL: A picture of something God made on the third day of creation week. (for Friday, September 2)

Updated Enrollment: Another 1st grade boy joined our class this week. There are 16 1st graders and 8 2nd graders. 2 students in K-1 join us for the afternoon. When everyone is here there are 11 girls and 15 boys. Thank you volunteer mothers and friends for the time you are able to share with us.

Reading Log: Remember to record your child’s reading minutes on the September calendar that was sent home last week. Return the calendar to school by October 3.

Happy Birthday: Claudia Engeberg turns 7 on September 4. Have a great birthday!

Scholastic Magazine: Remember the book orders need to be in the classroom by September 2. Thank you.

Polo Shirts: The Home & School leaders have set up a rack of gently used polo shirts in the school lobby. If you need some shirts for your child, check out the polo shirt exchange. If you have shirts that are too small, bring them to the school so another child could use them.

Remember the school dress code is for the students to wear polo shirts/collared button down shirts or dressier attire. (Girls may wear dresses.)

Math Vocab: We are working on learning vocabulary in math. Ask your student to define addend and sum for you.

Spelling: 2nd graders will begin spelling next week.

Homework: Next Tuesday and Thursday will be homework days. Look for your student to bring a math homework paper on those days.

Nutrition: We are studying about nutrition in science. Could you send an empty wrapper or food container with nutritional information on it on Tuesday morning, September 6. I want the students to view the sugar content in several products. I’m specifically looking for juice, granola bars, cereal, cookies, crackers, etc.

SHOW & TELL: Something that reminds you of summer. (for Friday, August 26)

MEMORY VERSE: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Gen. 1:1

Enrollment: We have a wonderful group of students this year. There are 15 1st graders and 8 2nd graders. Starting next week 2 students in K-1 will join us for the afternoon. When everyone is here there will be 11 girls and 14 boys. There have been several volunteers this week. It’s wonderful to have the extra helping hands.

The children have been practicing our routines. Knowing the rules and how to do life in our classroom is an important part of the learning before we can begin the curriculum in earnest.

Classroom Books: Remind your student to read the classroom book he/she checked out for the day. I stood at the door greeting the children this morning. Two or three of them forgot their book at home. They can’t check out a new one until the “old” one is returned.

Fund Raiser: Please remember to take the Premier Source
Survey to raise money for the school. More surveys are available in the office as
well as at tcja.org. We are also encouraging families to share the online link with
friends and families. www.premiersourceinc.net, Our goal is 250 surveys by Monday. Any questions call Keeni Mitchell at 392-3933.

Excused Absence: If your student is sick, please send a note with him/her when returning to school. I cannot legally make the absence excused unless I have a signed note from the parent or guardian. Thanks.

Psalm 91: We are learning the whole chapter of Psalm 91 to song this year. The past 2 days we have started learning to sing the first few lines of it. When we have it learned we’ll be performing it in some of the churches.

Plastic Spoons and Forks: Someone asked me a few days ago if there was anything I needed for the classroom. I recently thought of something—more disposable forks and spoons. Hardly a lunch period goes by that someone needs a fork or spoon. I keep a supply in the drawer by the sink but it is running low. If you have extras at home, I’m sure we could use them in the classroom.

Toys: Please encourage your
student to leave their toys at home. Sometimes toys become a distraction in the classroom so I’ve asked students not to bring them. If they forget, the toy might be taken away from them for a period of time.

The following is a list of the supplies you will need for the school year:
1. 2 Boxes of (24 box size crayons)( 1 box of crayons at a time to school)
2. 36 Ticonderoga pencils (only send 3-5 to school at a time)(can be purchased in bulk at Costco)
3. 2 Packages of colored pencils (1 pkg. at a time to school)
4. 4-6 Erasers (one at a time sent to school)(some children need more than others!)
5. 1 Pair of scissors
6. 10-12 Glue sticks (send only two at a time)
7. 2 School boxes (5" x 8" size)
8. 1 Box Kleenex
9. 2 Heavy duty folders for homework (no movie inspired folders please)
10. 1 Box of water colors
11. 1 Ultra fine point black Sharpie permanent marker
12. Backpack (for transporting papers and books to and from school)

Note: You are probably wondering about the large number of pencils, erasers, and glue sticks that I am suggesting for each student. During the course of the year your student will probably go through that many. After experiencing numerous complaints of "I need a new..." each year I think it would be wise to purchase a good supply while they are on sale. Keep the extras at home and send them to school as needed. Please mark all supplies with the student's name or initials. This is VERY important.

I’m strongly requesting the Ticonderoga pencils. Cheaper pencils ruin our electric sharpener. Fancy pencils that are covered in a plastic film are also hard in the sharpener.

SHOW & TELL: Pet Day

Coming Events:

June 2—Spring program for PK – 6 6:30 PM Children should be to the classroom by 6:20. We will sit together until our part of the program. Sabbath dress would be appropriate.

June 3 – Pet Day Caged pets may come in the morning. Pets on leashes should be brought at 12:15.

June 6 – Last Day of School—Dismissal at 1:00 PM Bring bags to carry home contents of desk and locker.

Thank you for the food each student provided for our Summer Birthday picnic. We had an amazing array of fresh fruits and vegetables plus some pastas, crackers and desserts. It was a fun picnic.

Summer: Keep your student on a scheduled reading program through the summer—both oral and silent reading would be good. When you have time, quiz for comprehension

Math skills need to be continued through the weeks of summer. There are great online sites. Google “math for kids” and I’m sure you’ll come up with some good places for your student to practice.

Spelling: Grade 2: Review—I will send the list home to review. We will have the 50 word test next Thursday, June 2.

Spelling: Grade 1: I will send the list home for review. We will have a 25 word test on Thursday, June 2.

Math Final: There will be a final Math test on Wednesday. This is a book test that covers concepts from all units studied this school year.

No Homework: This week is the last of assigned homework. No homework on May 31 & June 2.

Spring holes!: This is the time of year that the boys especially have sprouted holes in the knees of their jeans. Remember holes need patches or reserve the pants for play instead of wearing to school. I find that the students tend to “play” with the threads and make the holes bigger. It’s a distraction.

Great Poetry Race: Thank you for encouraging your student to participate in the Great Poetry Race: Emilee was the winner with 51 adults listening to her read the poem Smart. Colby was runner up with 41. Both students received a poetry book. The others who participated with 5 or more readings were: Taylee—20, Conner—13, Caleb—12, Taylor—12, Mackenzie—10, Makenna—10, Tyler—10, Weston—10, Ezra—9, Timmy—6. The participation reward was a bag of freeze dried fruit.

Teacher In-Service: Please remember that there will be no school on Monday, April 18. The teachers have an in-service day in Spokane.

Autobiography: Please help your student fill out the autobiography paper and return on Tuesday, April 19. I realize you already filled out the information about birth weight and length but that was just for us to compare to the size of an animal we were studying at the time. Music Program: On Friday, April 8, the students from Upper Columbia Academy will be presenting a band & choral program at 10:30. The director always asks the younger students to stand by their favorite instrument during the last number. The students have a great time with that. If you can, join us for the program.

Substitute: Mrs. O will be filling in for me on Wednesday, April 13. It’s my mother’s 90th birthday so my plan is to spend the day with my mom. The students will be in good hands.

Math: Our new lessons in math are telling time! 1st graders need to know time to the hour and half hour, second graders by 5 minute increments before and after the hour. The chapter test will be Friday, March 4.

Book: We just finished reading the book Hachiko Waits during story time after lunch. The children were fascinated. Several of them want a copy of their own. I can still order it from Scholastic for $4.00. If you want your child to have the book, send $4.00 by Monday and I’ll place an order.

A brief synopsis: The story takes place in Japan in the 1920’s & 30’s. Every day, Hachi greets his master at the train station after work. But when his master doesn’t come, Hachi keeps waiting—for 10 years! A heartbreaking true story of loyalty.

We looked up pictures of the dog online this afternoon. We love having the computer and projector in the classroom. It adds so much to our learning.

Guest: Today, Mackenzie’s sister, Jessica, gave a presentation on Healthy Eating to the students. She is working on getting a scholarship for college. The presentation was part of the requirements for applying for that college money. We all hope she is successful.

Pencils: Ask your student if he/she needs some new pencils. Some of the children are down to only 1 pencil. There are others who have a good supply.

Singing at Kennewick Church: Thank you to the nine students/parents who responded to the note about our singing appointment at the Kennewick Church on January 22. The children are singing part of Isaiah 53. The service begins at 11:30 AM. Your child can sit with you until the children’s story. After they listen to the story up front, I will have them stay there and then sing. Thank you!

Oucharek Family: Wonderful news! The Oucharek family passed their “green card” interview. They had to wait a couple of days for the paper work to be processed but we should be seeing them back with us next week. Praise the Lord for this good news.

Happy Birthday, Brendan: Brendan turns 7 on Friday, January 21. Have a great birthday!

Parent-Teacher Conferences: Wednesday, January 26, is the day for 2nd quarter conferences. The children will be dismissed at 1:00. I look forward to chatting with you about your student’s progress. Reading Award: 14 students have completed at least 50 books read at home so far this school year. The most recent finishers were Emilee and Artie. There is time for another 50 to be read before the year is over. Please encourage your student to spend quality time reading at home.

End of Quarter/semester: Friday is the last day of the quarter. The school year is at the halfway mark. You have been given a Parent/Teacher Conference form if you choose to sign up for a conference with me. There will only be one day for conferences. After the third quarter we are scheduled for 2 days of conferences which may make it easier for some of you to meet the schedule.

Christmas Offering: Thank you again for supporting on Christmas Offering for ADRA. We sent in a check for $692.66 which when matched will amount to: $4,848.62. We wish we could see the children who will benefit from the food.

Scholastic Book Orders: On Tuesday, I sent home two Scholastic book order papers. If you would like to order through the classroom, send your order back to school by Monday, January 10. Another way to order is to go to Scholastic.com and use the code HLC6H to order online.

Pathways Book: Our new book for this month is Twice Yours. It’s a wonderful parable of God’s love for us. Ask your child to tell you about the story.

Math: This week the 1st graders have learned about even and odd numbers. Quiz your student with numbers to see if he/she has the concept mastered. 2nd graders are working with numbers in the hundreds.

Christmas Project: This year we are again going to raise money for ADRA in place of buying Christmas presents for each other here in our classroom. ADRA stands for Adventist Development and Relief Agency and works in many countries where help is needed. This special offering is being matched by other donors. Each $1.00 brought in by the children will equal $7.00 with the matching funds.

Quoting from the ADRA magazine—“Today, nearly 860,000 children under age 5 in Africa’s Sahel region are at risk of severe malnutrition. This is why there is not a moment to waste in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. By supporting ADRA’s efforts to provide food, you are not only giving a person the nourishment they need to thrive, but also setting them on a path of future success.”

On Friday, December 3, we want to have a cookie sale for our school to raise money for this project. Each cookie will sell for 25 cents. All proceeds from the sale will go to our ADRA fund.

Each timed math paper repeats the same new combination many times in the 30 problems. If the student can’t remember the new fact it really slows him/her down.

Homework: Today the 2nd graders had a homework paper that involved coloring as well as writing the answers. If the paper was not completed when they walked in the door, they did not receive a sticker for completed work. Please remind your student to read ALL directions as well as put their name on the paper.

Sympathy: We’re all sorry that Enoch broke his arm last week. It is still painful and the students are trying to remember not to bump into him. Everyone was happy that he was able to be back in class on Wednesday.

We’re happy that Weston’s arm is healing quickly and he’s out of his cast. Hopefully we will have no more broken bones this school year.

Reading: Our new Pathways book is Charlie Horse. Ask your student to tell you the story! This is the book we read together after worship time. Today we did a Story Map of the book. The children have learned what “swayback” means. Ask your student for a definition of that word.

Timed Math: Each day we do a 3 minute timed math paper. There are 30 problems on the paper. If a student does not complete the paper in the 3 minutes an L is put on the paper. Even if he/she gets all the problems correct it still needs to be repeated the next day until speed is increased. If mistakes are made on the paper, the same paper will be repeated the following day. Each student moves on to the next level paper as he/she is ready. The goal for the 1st graders is to do all the addition and subtraction facts to 10 during this year. The second graders are starting where they finished last year. When the 11-18 concepts are finished the 2nd graders will move on to multiplication. One of the 2nd graders was working on the 2nd grade computation last year so this year he is doing the timing in 2 minutes instead of 3.

New Revised Class Enrollment: There are 11- 2nd graders, 8- 1st graders and 4- K-1 students in our classroom. The K-1 students join us at 11:40 Monday through Thursday. (A new student joined us on Tuesday, September 7—Jordan in 1st Grade)

Reading: I’m encouraging each student to check out a new book every day to take home and read in the evening. Some students have been forgetting to return their book, thus they can’t check out a new one until the previous checked-out book is back in the classroom. If a book is lost, the cost is $4.00 to pay for the book and be reinstated in the good graces of the book check-out system. (The price used to be $3.00, but if you’d noticed lately the cost of books has been climbing!)

Summer Birthday Potluck June 3: Another of our traditions is to have a potluck lunch at the end of the year to celebrate the summer birthdays as well as the end of the school year. It’s always a fun potluck. If you can take off a few minutes at lunch time, come and join us! Also pray that it will be good weather for an outside picnic!

Send bags for bringing home the desk/locker baggage on Thursday. I like sending it a day early so we can find the forgotten things before Friday.

Mother’s Day Project: If you enjoyed the project your student brought home for Mother’s Day, thank Nadeen Irvine. She organized the project several weeks ago. Then she brought in all the parts for the students to do the week before Mother’s Day. Little did I know what a blessing that would be! My father who had been staying with us while my mom was in Rehab for her broken hip, had a very painful belly on Sunday, May 2. After spending 5 hours in the Emergency Room he went to surgery for a perforated ulcer. All last week he was hospitalized. I’m thankful for those who could substitute in my classroom during some of those days when I just had to tend to parent needs. They are now both situated in the Jubilee Care Home just a block from the school. What a blessing it is to have them close by and in a good environment.

Track & Field Day: We had a wonderful day and beautiful weather for our Track Day. The students really participated well.

Hanford Health & Safety Expo: I’m planning to take the students to the Health & Safety Expo on Tuesday morning, May 18. I will need parents to go with us. If you are available let me know! We will be going on Ben Franklin Transit. I have 4 parents scheduled to go with us. If you have not signed up and are available we’d still love to have you come.

Visitation Day: Monday, April 5, will be TCJA’s visitation day for students in PreK through Grade 2. The morning will be filled with schoolwork and some fun activities. If you know a student who would like to come visit, please call Mrs. Hibbs at 547-8092. Our classroom will be a busy one with all the Kindergarteners joining us for the morning.

Community Service: Next Tuesday afternoon, April 6, please send work gloves with your student. We are going to spend some time picking up rocks in the area around the new Children’s Center. There will be no rock throwing, just gathering them in a big pile so the new lawn can be planted.

Overview: This was announced in the last newsletter, so this is just a
reminder that although the calendar shows February 22 as a day off school
for teacher's inservice, we took that day last month (January 19). This
means that we will be in school in February 22. Please change your calendar
accordingly. If parents have already made arrangements to take their
child(ren) out for the day and those arrangements cannot be changed, we need
you to contact the office to have the day excused. Otherwise, we are
expecting all students to be in class on this day. Again, we try to set our

grateful for the understanding and the flexibility of our school families.

Upcoming Event: Badminton Night

Overview: The nets will be set up and the gym is going to be open to play
some badminton. Games will be drop-in in format. If enough players show, we
can go to ladder tournament format. The objective is just to come out and
have some fun. If the turn-out warrants it, we'll make this a weekly feature
through February.

Upcoming Event: Principal's Open Gym
Date/Time: February 9 / 5:45-7:00pm
Who it impacts: All elementary students (through 6th grade)
Overview: I don't get opportunity to play with the lower elementary students
very often, so I am going to open the gym next Tuesday for an elementary gym
night. For all those who come out, we'll be playing indoor soccer. This will
be a first-time event. If interest continues, we will try to do this on a
twice-monthly basis.

Other Information Worthy of Note:

Stars and Stripes over TCJA.
It was more than 12 years ago that the flag that had been flying in front of
our school was taken down, the pole was removed, and a smaller flag was
attached to the side of the gym. Over the past few years we have been
planning to put in a new flag pole, but it took until this year before
someone took the helm and got that ball rolling. We want to thank Mr.
Laubach and his crew (his dad and brother, Patrick, Dean and several others)
for the work over Christmas, getting our new flagpole erected. Also, we want
to thank Mr. Daniel, Mr. Kostoff and our Tri-City pathfinders for hosting a
special dedication and first unfurling service. Finally, we want to thank
our seventh and eighth grade students who have been faithfully raising and
lowering the flag every day. It is nice to see our flag waving over us each
day.

Thank-You...
The Mission Trippers want to thank all those who came out to the dinner last
weekend. The evening was a huge success. Special thanks to the Salangos for
the meal. All of their labor and their travel was donated as their gift to
the mission project. We'd like to thank our parents for their support
throughout the project, from helping with decorations to tearing down. We'd
also like to thank all those who took a risk on us and purchased tickets. We
are still seeking donations to the project. We will be building a dining
room, and the total cost for the building will be about $6,800.00. We are
currently about $2,700 short of that goal.

Offering for Haiti: We will be collecting the offering for ADRA to help the hurting people of Haiti next Friday, January 29. ADRA is on the ground working right now helping as many people as they can. Last Friday they flew into the Dominican Republic and drove into Haiti over the mountains. That saved them from the gridlock at the Port-au-Prince airport.

Upcoming Event: January School Closures
Date/Time: January 18 & 19
Who it impacts: All Students

Overview: As we have every other year. we will again be closed the third Monday in January (the 18th) for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. In addition, please note that we will be closed January 19 as our employer is hosting professional growth meetings in College Place and our staff is required to participate in those meetings. This may be a good opportunity for parents to take a snow day and take their children out to Bluewood or one of the other winter playlands. We will provide childcare at a rate of $25 for the day. As childcare was over Christmas break, childcare again will feature crafts, games and activities to help the day pass more quickly.
Once again, we are offering a small discount to families with multiple children in the program. The second and subsequent children will be able to attend for $23. Please contact the office if you would like to sign up for this program as it is offered by reservation only.

Date/Time: January 24 – 5:00pm
Who it impacts: 9th grade and up... as well as all constituents

Overview: The 9th and 10th grade students will be hosting a fundraising dinner for the Mission Trip coming up in March of 2010. They will be heading out to Rosario Tesopaco (Ely’s home) where they will be adding rooms to the boys’ dormitory and starting a girls’ dormitory. Tony Salango, from Calgary Alberta, will be coming to our school to cater this event, and as he has done at all of his other fundraising dinners, he will be presenting his specialty, a variety of traditional Asian dishes and a few of his own concoctions such as vegetarian ginger beef (gluten) and butternut squash in coconut milk. The meal is a bargain at $18 per adult or $10 per child (10 and under), and includes dinner entertainment.You may purchase tickets from any of the students who are planning on going on the trip or you can contact the office to reserve your tickets. There are a limited number of seats available.

Friday Pizza Party: This Friday, teacher will be providing pizza, veggies, and drink for all the students in the classroom. This is our celebration party for teacher’s right arm being able to now stretch as high as the left! It’s taken 5 months of physical therapy to reach this goal! Thanks to Ilene’s mom for her help in getting the pizzas!

Christmas Offering: The Christmas offering was amazing. We made almost $175.00 in cookie sales. With the cash gifts on the tree, the total came to $668.77. When matched this will be $4,681.39 for ADRA to help feed hungry children. Thank you for your generosity!

Christmas Offering: This year we are going to take a special Christmas offering for ADRA in place of gifts for ourselves. (Adventist Development and Relief Agency International) The money will be matched—each $1.00 donated becomes $7.00 to feed hungry children. “Through God’s goodness, ADRA has a remarkable matching opportunity to help end hunger. We will take this offering on Friday, December 19. Several children have already been bringing in money. We have red and white stockings hanging on our Christmas tree which we’re filling with the offerings.

Thank you for your part in sending the delicious cookies on Thursday. We’ll update you as soon as we know the total for the cookie sale.

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM: Thursday evening, December 18, at 6:30, our Christmas program begins. We are participating in a musical with K-6. Mrs. Short, our director, is asking that the students wear a white shirt and black pants/skirt. Each family is asked to bring a Christmas dessert to share in the fellowship after the program.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOSUE & RIVERS: Both students will turn 8 just before December is over. Josue on December 30 and Rivers on December 31. We’ll celebrate after we return from Christmas break.

TEN COMMANDMENTS: I forgot to talk about the 10 commandments that came home last week typed out on a paper. I’m challenging the students to learn all of the commandments. It’s not a requirement but if a student can say all 10, he/she will receive something special as a reminder of those verses committed to memory. The memorization must be completed before the end of the school year!

I thought it would be good for the students to have a project that they can do to raise some extra funds for the Christmas offering. I’m proposing that we have a cookie sale on Thursday, December 10. You could make cookies with your child over the weekend, freeze them and then send them to school on the 10th.

We will make posters and advertise to the rest of the school. My plan is to sell one regular sized cookie for 25 cents. If the cookies are really small maybe they’ll be 2 for a quarter.

Thanksgiving Meal: On Tuesday, November 24, I will be providing a meal for the classroom. Please don’t send a lunch or order hot lunch that day. We will have easy to eat, kid friendly foods to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Spoons/Forks: Please send something to eat with in your child’s lunch. For a time I had a bag of spoons in my drawer. They disappeared very quickly. For both the environment and my classroom budget it would be good to send a utensil that can be washed and used again and again. Thanks!

Pumpkin Patch Adventure: This coming Monday, October 26, is our last chance to try for the field trip. We’re praying for clear weather. We will leave the school at 9:00 AM. Our appointment is at 9:30. Please remember to dress your child for being outdoors in a farm environment. I won’t send out another permission slip. Church Appointments: Our school has been asked to put on the church services at Kennewick SDA Church on October 17 and Riverview SDA Church on the 24th. Our class will be singing. I know it’s hard for some of you to participate because of previously scheduled responsibilities, but I’ll be sending out a note today to determine how many of my students will be able to make those two appointments. Book-it Reading Program: When your student turns in his/her reading minutes for this month (October) he/she will receive a Pizza Hut certificate for reading 240 minutes for the month.

Field Trip: We will be taking a field trip to the pumpkin patch/corn maze on Wednesday, October 14. At first we’d been scheduled to go the one on Road 68. After determining that they would not allow the children to go through the corn maze, we changed our trip to the Country Mercantile on Highway 395. Our tour is scheduled for 9:00 AM. We will need to leave the school by 8:35.

We need drivers for the trip. At the moment I have two drivers scheduled plus myself. I have need for drivers for 7 more children. Please let me know if you’d be available to drive.

Remember your child will need a booster seat. The state law requires children up to their 8th birthday to use a booster seat. Last month I measured the children and no one is tall enough to get out of the law. Only two students are old enough to not require a booster.

Church Appointments: Our school has been asked to put on the church services at Kennewick SDA Church on October 17 and Riverview SDA Church on the 24th. Our class will be singing. Enrollment: There are 18 students in the morning. One student joins us for the afternoon in the K-1 program. There are 10 first graders and 8 second graders, 12 boys (with K-1) and 7 girls.

Book Check-Out: I’ve already started the students on their classroom book checkout system. Only one book should be home at a time. As soon as the book is read and returned to the classroom, the student can check-out a new book. When a student completes reading 50 books from the classroom library at home, a Barnes and Noble gift certificate will be presented to the student. I’m asking students to read at home one hour per week. This is important for continued growth in reading skills. Several students are already amassing a row of stars on the reading chart for books checked out and read at home.

PE: Mrs. Short is teaching 1^st and 2^nd grade PE this year from 2:30-3:00 Monday thru Thursday. The students have been good about remembering appropriate shoes for running.

Welcome to Mrs. Canaday's First and Second Grade Classroom

Our first day of school is August 24, 2009 beginning at 8:30 AM. I'm looking forward to meeting each of you. The first day we will put supplies away, get acquainted, play some fun games and begin learning classroom routines. School dismisses at 12:30 PM on Monday, August 24.

A Brief Overview of Core Classwook

Bible

In our lessons we will be exploring God's Power. Your student will be reading from the International Children's Bible. Each time we look up a new text, students will highlight the text with a yellow colored pencil. By the end of the year there will be many texts highlighted.

Reading

Our reading program is a combination of guided reading, independent reading and a theme book each month from our Pathways program. We do many activities with the monthly theme book, both written assignments and a variety of other projects.

The Pathways program also includes word study, spelling, daily edit, writing, and phonics.

Math

During the year the first graders need to learn the addition/subtraction facts 0-10. The second graders will review those facts as well as continue learning the facts to 18. Second graders will learn double digit addition/subtraction with regrouping. The children also study geometry, fractions, measurement, telling time, counting money and problem solving.

Track & Field Day: Thank you parents who came to help us with the track and field day. We had a wonderful time and feel blessed that the weather was sunny with no rain! The children participated with great enthusiasm.

Singing Details: We will be singing this Sabbath, May 9 at the Kennewick High Art Fuller Auditorium, 500 S. Dayton Street about 9:45 AM. I would like the children at there by 9:35 so I can get them lined up and ready to perform. I understand there are three drinking fountains inside the front doors on the 6th street side of the building. I’ll plan to meet the students there. Dresses or skirts for girls, long pants and shirts for boys will be appropriate for the performance. The students can find you in the audience when we’re finished.

Field Trip: Next Tuesday, May 12, we plan to go to the Health & Safety Fair sponsored by Hanford at the TRAC. We will be using the city bus and leaving at the Court Street bus stop at 8:49. We should arrive at the TRAC on Burden shortly after 9:00. We will leave the TRAC at 11:45 and arrive back at TCJA about 12:15. We are a little late for lunch but hopefully the students will manage. Let me know if you’d like to go with us! We could use some more adult helpers. (The 3rd & 4th Graders will be going with us also.)

Track & Field Day: We are looking forward to Track & Field Day on Tuesday, May 5 at the Edgar Brown Memorial Stadium. The events will begin at 8:30 and end at 2:00. Children can be dropped off and picked up at the stadium. If those times don’t fit in your schedule you may drop students off and pick them up at TCJA. We will then ferry the children over by car or bus. We’re looking for adult helpers for the day so if you’re able to spend the day with us we’d put you to work.

Remember to slather your student in sun screen for the day. Please send water and a sack lunch. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Streams of Light: The first and second grade class has been asked to sing for the Education Rally on Sabbath, May 9 at the Kennewick High Auditorium sometime between 9:30-10:30. Track & Field Day: We are looking forward to Track & Field Day on Tuesday, May 5 at the Pasco High School Track. Mrs. O has been practicing with the students for some of the events.

Walk to the River: On Tuesday afternoon we made a short field trip to the river to see the baby geese. Thankfully Sasha’s mom was with us so there was an adult at the front of the line as well as at the end. It was a beautiful day and we were rewarded with seeing many babies. The grown-up geese didn’t let us get close to their young but we could see them well from a distance.

Singing: The first and second grade class has been asked to sing for the Education Rally on Sabbath, May 9 at the Kennewick High Auditorium sometime between 9:30-10:30. I will send a note home next week to ask if your student will be able to meet that appointment.

Healthy Snack: We had fun on Wednesday making a healthy snack face using flour tortillas. Most of the students enjoyed eating their creation which may have included peanut butter, cream cheese, almond butter or humus topped with carrots to look like hair, sunflower seeds, banana slices, dried cranberries or raisins to complete the face.

Shoes: More students have been wearing flip-flops to school since the warm weather hit. Be sure that your student brings sneakers to wear for PE. Crocs, sandals, flip-flops are not appropriate running gear. Actually I’d appreciate it if no student wore flip-flops in my classroom. Young students have trouble keeping them on their feet.

Glue: Several students have used up their glue sticks. A couple of new ones for the last 7 weeks of the school year would be nice! My stash is also running low.

Track & Field Day: We are looking forward to Track & Field Day on Tuesday, May 5 at the Pasco High School Track. Mrs. O has been practicing with the students for some of the events.

Shoes: More students have been wearing flip-flops to school since the warm weather hit. Be sure that your student brings sneakers to wear for PE. Crocs, sandals, flip-flops are not appropriate running gear. Thanks.

Parent-Teacher Conferences: I’ll look forward to visiting with you next week during our Parent-Teacher conference time. Remember the children will be out of school at noon on Wednesday and Thursday the 8th & 9th.

Italy: We had a wonderful trip to Italy during Spring Break. I had “Show & Tell” on Monday for the class. I will show them some of my pictures in a few days when I have time to get a slide show ready.

Visitation Day: Monday, April 6, is visitation day in our classroom from 8:00-11:30 AM. We will be doing some special activities with the Kindergarten children who will spend the morning with us. If you know anyone who might like to visit TCJA, invite them to join us that morning.

Pizza-Hut Book-it Program: The month of March was the last month for the book-it program with free pizza from Pizza-Hut. Bailey, Makenzie, Drew, & Sasha each turned in 240 or more minutes for the free pizza coupon on Wednesday, April 1.

I will continue to send home reading calendars because the children need to continue reading at home even if there is no reward other than becoming better readers!

I am going there to prepare a place for you. After I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back. Clocks: We are now telling time in both 1st and 2nd grades. The first graders are just doing time to the hour and half hour. Second graders are telling time on 5 minute increments. Some of them are challenged with quarter to and quarter after the hour. If you have analog clocks at home have your student practice with the real thing rather than just a picture or paper clock!

Happy Birthday: Sasha turns 7 on March 16. We will look forward to celebrating her birthday next Monday.

Spring Break: Remember our spring break begins on Thursday, March 19 (No school on Thursday). We’ll be back in school on Monday, March 30. Several of us are flying out of Spokane at 6:00 AM on the 19th. Our destination is Italy! We return to Spokane on Sunday evening, the 29th. This trip has been in the planning for over a year so those of us who are going are pretty excited about the adventure.

End of Quarter: The last day of 3rd quarter is Wednesday the 18th. Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for April 8 & 9.

There will not be a note next week. Keep this one for the spelling words for the week after spring break.

Money: We are still counting money in math. Please give your student piles of coins to practice counting. The first graders are doing pennies, dimes, nickels and quarters. The second graders have added quarters and half dollars to the mix (if you have any half dollars!). Just a note of clarification—I haven’t been allowing the 2nd graders to actually use 50 cent pieces in their money counting. I haven’t had a 50 cent coin in my purse in a long time. I’ve asked the teller at my bank a couple of times if he had a 50 cent piece in his till. Both times the answer has been “no!” He said he could order one for me. Obviously they’re pretty rare in circulation.

Eating Outside: We’ve been able to eat outside for the last couple of days. It’s such a nice break to be able to drop crumbs on the ground rather than the floor and our desks.

Spring Break: Remember our spring break begins on Thursday, March 19. We’ll be back in school on Monday, March 30.
